9 Ways to Propose – the Irish Way!

Do you want to add an Irish twist to your proposal?

The Irish language is one of the most romantic in the world and the country is known the world over as the ‘island of saints and scholars’. The beautifully lyrical way that sentences are constructed make Gaelic a very poignant way of communicating, especially when it comes to emotions.

If you are planning to propose marriage and you or the person you are proposing to has Irish connections, it could make it especially meaningful to use some words of Irish when asking the big question. Just make sure that they understand what you are asking them!

We look at 9 ways to propose – the Irish way!

1. An luifeasa le mo mhuintirse?
"Would you like to buried with my people?"
This is not the most romantic sounding of proposals, but when delivered with the correct Irish pronunciation, it manages to sound romantic and the intentions are good, despite the black humor.

2. Nil leigheas ar an ngra ach posadh
"There is no cure for love other than marriage."
This is a way of telling your loved one that you love them and offering the logical conclusion to this – their hand in marriage!

3. Is tu mo ghra
"I love you."
It doesn’t get more straightforward and romantic than this. It is a simple and absolutely beautiful way of telling somebody how much you mean to them.

4. A chuisle, a chroi
"My pulse, my heart."
This Irish saying is more poetic than some and it will definitely not be forgotten at this most special moment in your lives.

5. An bposfaidh tu me?
"Will you marry me?"
If you want to propose in English and then add in a few words in Irish, this is a nice conclusion as Gaeilge and is a straightforward way of asking the all important question.

6. Anamchara
"Soul mate"
This beautiful phrase is often used in both the English and Irish languages. There is even a series of rings at Rings from Ireland featuring these words engraved in to them and they are a perfect choice as either an engagement or wedding band.

7. Mo shiorghra
"My eternal love"
This comes up a lot in Gaelic poetry and is a beautiful way of expressing your undying love for your partner. It is a nice term of endearment and a good way of bringing in the Irish language to your proposal.

8. Taim I ngra leat
"I’m in love with you"
A good introduction to a marriage proposal, these words whether delivered in English or Irish will certainly set the tone for what you are going to say next and the big question that you have planned.

9. Gra mo chroi

"Love of my heart"
A traditional Irish love saying, if you are looking for a simple, straightforward but yet very romantic way of declaring your love, then this is another nice phrase.

Congratulations on taking this momentous step in your life, or as we say in Irish – Comhghairdeas.
