Celtic Torc Ring

A torc (also known as a torque or torq) was a metal necklace dating back to the Iron age and worn by the Celts to show that a person was of a high rank in society.

There were two kinds of torc – they were either made from a single piece of metal or from many strands twisted together. Their popularity reached out widely across Europe in the European Iron Age from around the 8th century BC to the 3rd century AD. Torcs were found across many cultures, including that of the Illyrian, Thracian and Celtic peoples.

Moving in to the Iron age, for Celts, the torc was very important denoting rank. Some of the most famous Celtic works of art are torcs. The Celtic torc seemed to vanish during the time of migration but then came back again, more commonly in silver in the Viking Age.

While most torcs were open at the front as they were designed to be worn permanently, some have been discovered with clasps and other mechanisms to close them. They were usually passed down through the generations. Some Celtic warriors even went to battle wearing no clothing apart from a decorative and identifying torc worn around their neck.

Ireland is a treasure trove of torcs and there have been many amazing finds over the years and these still continue to this day. The National Museum of Ireland now has a magnificent collection including two torcs from the ‘Broighter hoard’ which were discovered in 1896 on a farm in County Derry. These are included with other treasures such as the famous Tara Brooch and Ardagh Chalice.

At Rings from Ireland, the Celtic Torc Antique ring is a real treasure and a very special piece of jewelry that brings together the high points of Irish and Celtic history in a torc style.

It measures 5.5mm in width and can be worn as an everyday piece or also works beautifully as a piece of jewelry for special occasions.
