Timeless Classic Pearl 'Teardrop of the Moon'

The timeless and classic pearl never goes out of fashion. A symbol of purity and innocence, pearls are one of the oldest gemstones known to man and are an enduring classic choice for both day and night.

Pearls are truly special and their magical quality has seen them poetically described as the ‘teardrops of the moon’. Pearls were most likely to have been discovered thousands of years ago by people searching for food along the seashore. Their shimmering beauty has been prized ever since and they have never lost their popularity.

In Ancient Rome the pearl was the ultimate symbol of wealth and social standing and the ancient Greeks associated the pearl with love, marriage and unrivaled beauty.

Unlike most gemstones that are found in nature, pearls have an organic origin. They are created inside the shells of particular species of oysters and clams. Some pearls are found naturally in mollusks that inhabit the sea or also in freshwater settings such as rivers. Many pearls today are also cultured-raised in oyster farms, ensuring that the pearl industry is thriving.

But how is a pearl created? A very small fragment of rock, a parasite or a sand grain enters the shell of the mollusk. In an extraordinary process, this then irritates the oyster or the clam, creating a response where the organism coats what it senses as ‘foreign material’ with layer over layer of shell material.

Pearls formed on the inside of the shell are usually irregular and odd in shape and so they have a low value commercially. However, pearls formed within the tissue of the mollusk are either spherical or pear-shaped, and are highly sought out for jewelry. Pearls are made mostly of aragonite, a relatively soft carbonate mineral (CaCO3) that also makes up the shells of mollusks.
